Samoa consists of volcanic islands, which offer a fascinating diversity of spectacular landscapes. Savaii, the younger of the two main islands of Upolu and Savaii, yet the biggest of the islands in the Samoa archipelago, is still considered volcanically active with most recent eruption being Mt Matavanu in northen Savaii in 1905. Savaii, like Upolu Island, has a rugged mountainous interior, with a high point at Mt Silisili (1,858 mitres), are punctuated by over two hundred volcanic craters, several crater lakes, breathtaking valleys, gorges and waterfall plummeting from the high mountains down to the coastal plains and valleys below.
Lava tube caves of exciting beauty, wind for kilometers only meters below the basaltic volcanic plains. The coastline is as beautiful as it is varied. Precipitous lava flow cliffs, roaring blowholes, wave eroded arches, freshwater pools, spectacular bays, coves and serene sandy beaches watching lazily over offshore fringing reefs and lagoons, are some of the natural splendours found in these islands
